Giant Panda, a Microgaming slot machine, is offered as part of a series that’s inspired by wildlife. It’s called Untamed, and in each title you see a different bird or animal that’s the focus. In this case we have a giant panda, while in other slots we get eagles, wolves and tigers. The game that is built around the Giant Panda will get its 5 reels filled with 243 ways to win, so there are no regular lines to be found inside. A single combination will pay up to $1,500, while scatters can deliver prizes of $22,500. Wild symbols, scatters, lucky nudges, collectable symbols which bring you wild reels, free spins and sticky wilds are all present as features inside.
The slots of the series offer ways to win and require that all bets use a minimum of 30 coins. You can get that number up though, the maximum bet using 450 coins, or 15 coins per bet line. Since the coin value has a limited range, of just $0.01 to $0.20, the maximum bet gets up to $90 only, even though there are so many coins used.
Like the other games from Untamed series, Giant Panda has a focus on a single wild animal. It’s a Panda Bear that gets this focus, obviously, and we’re going to see it or its family in multiple symbols. Some of the graphics are reserved for the area where the Panda Bear lives, the background showing a forest with bamboo trees for examples. The symbols also include an image of the forest from the side of a mountain, along with a logo, the Panda’s eye and images of the adult and baby Pandas. At the end of the list they’ve put the Royals, which are also the most boring images they’ve used. The entire Untamed series is underwhelming to say the least, especially where the visuals are in discussion. Microgaming is not exactly known for the design quality in their slots, and they seem to be doing just as bad with Giant Panda.
To create a combination, and get paid at the same time, you need symbols of the same type (wilds can help too) on reels that are consecutive and starting from the left. It’s the ways to win system, as you may have seen it in many other slot machines from the last couple of years. For the wild symbol, which can be quite profitable in this sort of game, you will get the logo of the slot. You use the wilds to form your combinations, either just with wilds or with regular symbols as well. Every single wild that you get will be collected, in a box that is visible underneath each reel. Get four wilds collected from a single reel, and you’re going to get that reel wild for the next four rounds. It’s entirely possible to land multiple combinations of wilds during those rounds. The Panda’s Eye is the scatter symbol. The series always uses the eye of the focus animal/bird in this role. You get the best rewards that any five symbols can give away in this slot machine, up to $22,500 being possible. By landing three to five such Eye scatters anywhere on the reels (don’t have to be on consecutive reels), you can get 10 free spins. The feature seems like a lot of fun, especially since it gets Brilliant Wilds. These are wild symbols which become sticky, remaining on the screen until the feature is over. Landing a lot of wins with wilds in them is so much easier when you have such a feature to rely on.
If we look only at the scatter symbol, which pays the most with the smallest number of symbols, then you can win $22,500 from this game. There is also the matter of the wild symbol though, which pays up to $1,500 for a combo. Since the wilds become sticky during free spins, it’s not impossible to land quite a few paying combinations on those 243 ways to win. It’s even possible to have all the positions occupied by wilds, which could bring you a reward of over $360,000. There will be an average Return to Player of around 96% in the long run, which is considered OK these days. It’s a reason to play a game that you already like, but it wouldn’t make it a must play title otherwise.
Untamed Giant Panda is as much of a miss as the other slots from series, and once again it’s the graphics that are the major fail.
